Hurricanes and Your Home: Why Pest Control Shouldn't Be Overlooked

We know that the very LAST thing you'll want to think about when you're facing the onslaught of yet another hurricane, is pest control. Sadly, even minimal bad weather damage can affect your home or building to a point where it is no longer keeping the "bad guys" out. The "bad guys" in question, of course, being wild or pest animals.

Bad weather has a seriously adverse effect on life, and getting your life rebuilt and back on track once the damage has been done is a lengthy process, and an exhausting one. Between making sure the roof is repaired back to how it was before the weather hit, and the big cleanup operation that usually involves putting at least one fence panel back where it belongs, checking for wild animal infestations is certainly not at the front of your mind. However, there is a chance you could kill two birds with the proverbial one stone.

Here's how …

When your home or business property has been battered by bad weather, there are likely to be lots of little patches of damage, right alongside larger problems. The larger problems are going to be the most important ones for you — they will probably have the biggest impact. The smaller problems — little holes here and there — are going to be overlooked somewhat, at least for the time being. Those smaller holes are what let animals right into your home, though, and if your home has been battered by the bad weather, you can imagine the utter devastation it will have had on the wild animal population around you.

These creatures are going to do what makes sense to them — find a place to hide and shelter. That's likely to be a human-built structure, because a brick home is going to last a long longer than a flimsy tree in the woods against wind, rain, snow or hail. Flooding is also a big concern — this causes waterways and sewage pipes to become overworked, and it will only be a matter of time before they deteriorate to a point where they start letting critters in. Rats, for example, are commonly found in sewers, and if points of that sewer system become faulty, the rodents have a free pass to enter your home, usually through the toilet or similar.

Whether your home looks absolutely fine after the bad weather or not, you MUST inspect it. Both the inside and outside of the building should be inspected, making sure to focus attention on areas that are commonly targeted; such as, ducts and pipes, broken siding, chimneys, where walls and floors meet, where walls and ceilings meet, around doors and windows, etc. Patches of damage should be repaired immediately, even if it looks trivial. A piece of broken siding is easily torn right off the building by a raccoon with strong and dexterous hands, and many wild critters are keen diggers, meaning that the underneath and foundations of your home aren't entirely safe, either. This is even more so the case if your home has suffered at the hands of flooding. It's not just the water that'll come piling into your home; it'll also be insects, rodents, and a whole bunch of other critters.

Although a seemingly trivial concern, pest control after a hurricane or period of bad weather is important. For more information on how you can protect your home from even more trouble, get in touch with us today.
